Volunteer Opportunity Announcement

Opportunity

Are you learning Russian or looking for opportunities to practice? Do you come from a family where Russian is spoken and want to connect with your heritage language? Are you an international student seeking to meet people from the Russian-speaking community in Madison? Regardless of your Russian language ability, we have a unique volunteer opportunity for you!

Madison Russian School seeks volunteers to assist with K-8 student support, monitoring hallways, and assisting teachers in the classroom. Volunteers are needed for 1- to 3-hour blocks on Saturdays between 9 am and 2 pm. You will be exposed to spoken Russian and encouraged to engage with as much (or as little) Russian as you have right now.

About the School

Madison Russian School is a local, independent, non-profit organization that brings together families interested in sustaining Russian language for themselves and their children. Our school community is made up of families from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The school is parent-run and offers K-8 children classes in Russian language and literature, art, chess, math, dance, cooking, theater and performing arts, choir, and more. The school also offers classes to adults who are learning Russian as a foreign language. All classes are taught in Russian.

The school holds classes on Saturdays between 9 am and 3 pm from September 14 to December 21 in the fall and January 18 to May 17 in the spring. The school, which holds no religious affiliation, holds classes at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Segoe Road (at Mineral Point Rd) and is easily accessible by public transportation.

Benefits

As a volunteer, you’ll enjoy the unique experience of being immersed in the Russian language without having to travel overseas. You’ll also have opportunities to build relationships with the local Russian-speaking community, develop skills for working with bilingual children, and gain experience working with a community-based nonprofit organization.

Qualifications

Comfort working with children ages 5 to 10 is highly desirable.

Knowledge of Russian is preferred but not required.
